Grew up and educated in Suffolk, qualified as a chartered accountant in 1965 then worked with an International Accountancy firm in London, the Netherlands and South Africa. While in S.A. I moved into the commercial accounting/IT sector with Mobil Oil and then the Norwich Union as chief accountant covering the whole of Southern Africa. Returned to the UK as chief accountant of a small Merchant Bank in the City owned by NU. Settled in Cornwall in 1980 to set up an accounting practice and still work part time. I have been involved with charity work in the Health Sector for 35 years.

Dr John McGrane

Trustee & Oncology Consultant

I have been working as a consultant at the Royal Cornwall Hospital since 2014 having previously trained at cancer centres in Plymouth, Exeter and Edinburgh.

I specialise in the treatment of Urological and Gynaecological cancers. I am actively interested in clinical trials and e-health solutions to improve ongoing patient care and support and I have seen at first hand the excellent benefits to patient care in Cornwall brought about by the generous donations to the Sunrise Appeal.

Dr Toby Talbot

Trustee & Oncology Consultant

I have spent the last 16 years training as a doctor in Cornwall and for the last 7 years have been privileged to be a consultant oncologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. I have therefore been in a position to see the whole process of the Sunrise Appeal and everything it has achieved and in many ways, this has shaped my career. The Sunrise Centre opened in 2003 with dedicated radiotherapy services prior to which patients needed to travel to Plymouth for complex treatments – this is something I remember well and it was often hugely difficuilt for patients to make this journey. The Sunrise Appeal was vital in providing major capital investment into the building which has transformed cancer treatments for our population. Since I have been a consultant I have worked directly with the Sunrise Appeal and have upgraded our radiotherapy machines to amongst the best in the world and this has allowed the most cutting edge treatments to be offered without the need to leave Cornwall. There is no doubt that I have been able to deliver treatments using equipment purchased or supported by the Sunrise Appeal that would otherwise have meant patients receiving no treatment at all.

Janet Shephard

Trustee

Having qualified as a Radiotherapy Radiographer in 1973 I worked in the Wessex Oncology Centre before moving to Cornwall in 1982. When appointed head of department my aim was to raise the profile of clinical oncology in Cornwall. I became involved with a number of regional and national committees, chaired the Radiotherapy Advisory Group for the College of Radiographers, and gave presentations across the UK. I had a particular interest in education, professional development and new ways of working and was a member of various professional and inter-professional working groups who developed and published a number of national strategy and guidance documents including “Breaking the Mould: Roles Responsibilities and Skills Mix in Departments of Clinical Oncology“. I was determined to see a state of the art clinical oncology service at Royal Cornwall Hospital and was thrilled to outline my vision at the launch of the Sunrise Appeal at Eden. I was actively engaged in fundraising and liaising with Radio Cornwall, alongside the planning and building of the Sunrise Centre. I remain committed to ensuring that Sunrise Appeal funds are used to enhance treatment at the Sunrise Centre by supporting new and innovative developments.

Sharon Tatlow

Office Administrator

I qualified as a Radiotherapy Radiographer in 1978 in Birmingham where I worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for 5 years before moving to Cornwall with my husband’s job. I then started working at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in the Radiotherapy Department, when it was a small, cramped and very basic unit in the basement of the tower block. Over the years I was able to contribute to the desire and design to develop the department into a state of the art Clinical Oncology unit and it was with great pride and joy that I saw this come to fruition with the opening of the Sunrise Centre in 2002. I continued to work in the Centre until retiring in March 2021, witnessing the many benefits and improvements that the Sunrise Appeal has brought to the patients of Cornwall. Shortly after this an opportunity arose to become the Sunrise Appeal Co Ordinator so I am delighted that my ties with the wonderful team will not be broken!

Jo Neale

Trustee

Born and educated in Sutton Coldfield, after travelling the world and working in Namibia I moved to Cornwall in 1999 and joined Pirate FM’s commercial team, enjoying a 10 year tenure as their Sales Manager. Since 2010 I have been building our family business – Idenna Creative – working with businesses across Cornwall, the UK and internationally. As a long-standing member of the Cornish community and marketing professional it’s a privilege to volunteer my time and support to the Sunrise Appeal – the work the charity and its supporters deliver has been a source of great inspiration for many years. Having witnessed firsthand the wonderful care and treatments that come as a result of The Sunrise Appeal’s funding efforts, I was incredibly proud to become a Trustee for the Sunrise Appeal in 2023.
